The UTC treats most injuries and illnesses that are urgent but not life-threatening, for example, strains, sprains, broken bones, minor burns and scalds, bites, stings, minor head and eye injuries.
No appointment is necessary, but on arrival, there will be an initial assessment by one of our clinicians to prioritise the urgency of your care. Patients will be seen in order of clinical importance, so patients may have to wait if their condition is not as serious as others.
The Urgent Treatment Centre is an essential service helping to ease pressure on ED and deliver rapid, appropriate care to patients at their time of need.
You may be sent off-site for your care where appropriate, for example, you may be directed to a local pharmacist, local GP HUB or wound clinic. This ensures that patients with more severe symptoms are seen more quickly, diagnosed, treated and discharged or if necessary admitted directly to the hospital.
A Primary Care service co-located to the Emergency Department (ED) to enable people with minor illness to have a primary care delivered
service, ensuring that ED professionals use their expertise to focus on
major or life threatening health issues
First, you will be seen by a nurse from the hospital who will assess your condition and direct you to the appropriate service. This could be the Emergency Department, back to your own GP or to a pharmacy. If they assess that you need to be seen by the GP Service then you will be asked to take a seat in the waiting area. You will then be seen by either a GP or an Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
The Urgent Treatment Centre is an essential service helping to ease pressure on the ED and deliver rapid, appropriate care to patients.

Call your own Surgery to be connected
We support GP surgeries by providing a telephone consultation service; patient demand for appointments commonly exceeds supply so this service strengthens appointment systems, waiting times and the ability to prioritise emergencies. During the consultations the clinicians are able to complete medication reviews; diagnose; advise/prescribe medications; request blood tests; and where possible refer to specialist services. If you would like more information on this service please contact the office on 01702 742102
We provide Cohorting Services at Southend Hospital; Broomfield Hospital; Ipswich Hospital; and Colchester Hospital. The aim of this service is to assist the ambulance service in offloading patients into the ED at busy times to allow them to get back into service and to ensure patients are not left waiting on the back of ambulances for excessive periods of time. They are moved into a designated holding area and are cared for by a nursing team while waiting for a doctor and or specialist team to review them and make a decision on admission or treatment and discharge. If a decision to admit is made, patients will usually stay within the Cohorting area until a bed on the ward is available. The hours of access vary between sites but are all for a minimum of 12hrs up to 24hrs daily - If you would like more information on this service please contact the office on 01702 742102
